Hoodoo is the great grandmother of the African American church. Hoodoo is older than the founding of the United States of America. Hoodoo is older than the establishment of the Black church in America. Hoodoo comes from the Ewe word HuDu, which means spirit work. Hoodoo is about work i.e. root work, conjure work, spirit work. Hoodoo existed before the founding of the Black church. When the Black church was allowed to exist during slavery, Hoodoo hid within the Black church. However, Hoodoo is not Christianity. Hoodoo is a mixture of West/Central African spirituality.
